Beginner Optimist - Morning Class

Beginner Optimist: Morning Class 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Pre-requisite: 9 years old by the start of the session. Student Age Recommendation: 9-13 years old or up to 110 lbs. The Optimist Beginner class is designed to teach children basic sailing and seamanship skills. The primary goal is to ensure that each child have positive experiences on the water while building confidence and practicing good teamwork. In addition to learning how to sail upwind children will be exposed to principles of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through sailing. By the end of the course students should feel comfortable sailing alone in an International Optimist Dinghy. We encourage all parents to participate in Parent Day (2nd Thursday) you will be surprised at the skills your son or daughter gained at sailing camp.

Beginner 420 - Morning Class

420 – Beginner: Morning Class 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Pre-requisite: 13 years old by the start of the session or Director’s Approval Student Age Recommendation: 13-18 years old Cost: $300 The 420 Beginner class is designed for novices and junior sailors alike who are experiencing sailing a double-handed boat for the first time. Students will learn to effectively communicate on the boat and work as a team both on and off the water. The class will focus on boat control and boat handling as well as basic sailing principles and seamanship. Through on land demonstrations and on the water drills students will learn to fly a spinnaker. Parents are encouraged to participate in Parent Day (2nd Thursday).

On land chalk talks and drills will utilize the sport of sailing to teach key principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students will be introduced to course racing along with basic tactics and strategies used in sailboat racing. Parents are encouraged to participate in Parent Day (2nd Thursday.)

Advanced 420 - Morning Class

420 - Advanced: Morning Class 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Pre-requisite: 420 Beginner or Directors Approval Student Age Recommendation: 13-18 years old Cost: $300 The 420 Advanced class is an extension of the 420 Beginner Class. It provides experienced sailors and Optimist racers an opportunity to further their skills in a double handed boat. Sailors will trade off learning the skills needed to skipper and crew. The class will introduce basic racing tactics and focus on refining boat handling and boat speed. Sailors will learn how to properly use a spinnaker and be introduced to the trapeze. Parents are encouraged to participate in Parent Day (2nd Thursday).

Pollywogs Pre-Beginner Program

Pollywogs Pre-Beginner Program: Morning Class 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Pre-requisite: 6 years old by June 1st Student Age Recommendation: 6-8 years old Cost: $150 Pollywogs is a “pre-beginner” program designed to introduce younger children to sailing and fun on the water. Children who have reached the age of six by June 1st and who are able to swim and function within a group will be admitted. Children will be introduced to sailing and several types of boats including our Flying Scott, Optimist, and 420’s. Parents are encouraged to attend Parent Day on Thursday.
